Surface forces in particle technology: Wet systems
Surface forces play a fundamental role in particle processing as they control the stability, adhesion, friction and rheology of particulate systems and information on all of these can be obtained from an analysis of the normal forces measured between particles. Therefore particle processing at all stages can be informed by knowledge of the forces between the constituent particles. For wet parti...
متن کاملA Shovel With a Perforated Blade Reduces Energy Expenditure Required for Digging Wet Clay
OBJECTIVE A shovel with a blade perforated with small holes was tested to see whether a worker would use less whole-body energy to dig wet clay than with a shovel with an opaque blade. BACKGROUND A perforated shovel is hypothesized to require less whole-body energy on the basis of adhesion theory; a smaller surface area would require less physical effort to dig and release soil from the blade...

متن کاملEffects of environmental and test conditions on VOC emissions from "wet" coating materials.
In this paper, numerical simulations have been conducted to study the effects of key environmental and test conditions (air velocity, temperature, film thickness, and sample application time) on volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from a "wet" coating material (wood stain). Simulation results indicate that air velocity and sample application time only significantly affect the emission pro...
متن کاملElectrical double layer catalyzed wet-etching of silicon dioxide.
We show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) accelerate the wet etching of silicon dioxide in a strong alkaline solution. This catalytic effect is due to the spontaneous adsorption of hydroxide on the surface of the CNTs. Such adsorption creates an electrical double layer around the CNTs within which the concentration of hydroxide is higher than the bulk value. Our result suggests that the electrical d...
